Anatomy (2020)

Reproductions of sexual assault evidence collection kit diagrams; 8.5”x11”x2” set-up boxes; inkjet prints on paper

Building off of the research of Anthem, Anatomy is a comparison of just the figurative diagrams used to document injuries in the different sexual assault evidence collection kits or "rape kits" used in each US state.  Although like the kits themselves these diagrams vary state to state, they are almost exclusively cis-gendered and able-bodied. They lack any significant anatomical detail so as to almost appear abstract, yet include strange seemingly superfluous additions like hairstyles, which often function to encode the body depicted as white.  These various diagrams have been isolated and printed at their original dimensions and on their original support.

This piece was featured in the exhibition To Cast Too Bold a Shadow at the 8th Floor/Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation from October 15, 2020 to February 6, 2021. Virtual tour available here: https://vimeo.com/505395891
